China is laying claim to the Whitsun Reef, a miniscule landform near the Philippines just South of the Spratly Islands. China has sent hundreds of fishing ships in an oddly militaristic formation while denying the presence of naval personnel. Infuriated by the gesture, the Philippines is making haste to build a naval installation at the reef and to fortify other parts of the South China Sea and the highly-contested Spratly Islands. Vietnam, Thailand and other regional players also have claims in the area. RT America’s Alex Mihailovich reports.

Christmas Island is so much closer to Indonesia (350km distance) than Australia (1,550 km distance). Yet Australia claims Christmas Island as its own.

This is a good map that tells the story. It is the main waterway for China, and the US military base is so close in Phillipine.

There is an internal Philippine political struggle between US sympathizers and independent minded ones like Pres Duterte. Many of the Military and Foreign Service are pro US but Duterte has support of the people. Pro US forces are using the island dispute to weaken Duterte's popularity.

These island are a paradise for diver like me. It is better than Maldives as the marine biodiversity is amazing. China plan to diversify and build these island into another destination are to be applauded. Due US behest and duress, Philippines and Vietnam were trying to goad China into a war.
