It's amazing that the Chinese Communist Party were able to devise and implement a vision that wouldn't be realized for many decades, and in so doing lifted more people out of poverty than probably any other time in human history. Anyone who claims socialism or communism has never succeeded needs a history lesson by Dr. Wolff.

Too bad many Americans don’t seem to have had sufficient public education that would teach critical thinking skills sufficient to understand this.

The Prof is absolutely correct in his analysis on China's success. The Banana Republic of America (BRA) was perfectly happy to exploit the slave labour of the Chinese population for 40 years to provide American companies wildly obscene profits over the same period. Nobody was concerned about the terrible working conditions the Chinese had to bear to ensure the sustained profitability of those companies. As the Prof rightly pointed out, the Chinese were prepared to endure those conditions in exchange for the agreed upon transfer of technology to them in the process. That was the deal. For the BRA to now allege and accuse the Chinese of having ""stolen" technology from the west , in addition to using slave Uyghur labour etc etc, is nothing short of confirming what a cheap bunch of politicians that the BRA has running the country. Absolutely no shame and no self pride at all. That's why it is the Banana Republic that it is. Trash.

China does have democratic workplaces at the village level. Most of the farm lands are owned by whole village and managed by the farmers themselves democratically.

Thank you, Richard, for understanding the history... it is not the intention for Chinese to be the super power, people just want to work and have a better life, and never be threatened again.

I am always amazed that the way dr Wolff explains things, it actually makes sense, easy sense! But the ways that our leaders and status-quo-loving MSM’s attempt to explain everything is an exercise in creating a brain-twisting headache! All to make sure that they keep the sensible parts out and their backdoor way to all the riches intact.

Dear Prof Wolff. I wish to thank you.
I started trying to understand the US political system just after Trump got elected, largely in order to understand how it was possible that he got elected. Shortly after that I started learning about China, in order to understand why it was that one company, Huawei (who I'd never hear of) could pose such an existential threat to the US. And my journey over the last four and a bit years has taken me down quite a few alleys, some of which were dead ends. You were one of the people that I latched on to who made me understand some basic truths about the US/China relationship, which has proved enormously helpful in guiding me through the morass of misinformation which the US media churns out about the middle kingdom. It is surprising and depressing the extent to which the US feels the need to bolster itself at the expense of others and just how pervasive this is.
In your presentation tonight
I take issue with only one small thing. I heard a clip recently from a speech given by Hilary Clinton in 2009 when she was Secretary of State under Obama. in which she explains that China's economic rise makes it a de facto enemy of the US. To be fair to you this does fit in with your post-2008 analysis but I bring it up merely to demonstrate that although Trump was particularly toxic towards China, the sentiment goes back way before him.
I really, really hope that somehow your final thoughts about co-operation can be achieved because otherwise the consequences are too horrible to contemplate.

We are very fortunate to have people like Mr. Wolff to inform us with this very balanced and knowledgeable information as always, sadly it's only a small fraction space that allows his and a few others to trickle the information to the public, as the main media just to sensationalism any news for the $$$$ and their personal views ONLY!

American leadership is locked in a we win/you lose, self-pontification, demonize the adversaries mentality and cannot/will not change, until it blows up. Sad. Cooperation would be much better. But that requires wisdom and humility.

Americans have overly abused their use of "Human rights" and "democracy" -- and they will have to bear those consequences soon -- China will show the world the future of a real ECONOMOCRACY !!!!!! With fundamental economic as the base, sharing more economically -- then the real democracy will come when the nation's fully educated with literacy on and about economy and representative government .....

Prof Wolff is one of my “must hear” speakers on internet and this is another brilliant piece of work. One factual point regarding China’s receiving foreign aid. The most important help China received was in 1950s from the Soviet Union before the relationship went sour: the so called 156 large projects which included mostly heavy industrial projects. These have fundamentally converted China from an agricultural economy to an industrial economy, andlaid a critical foundation for the economic take off after the economic reforms initiated by Deng and his colleagues in 1978. Today China is the only country which possesses every economic sector classified by the UN’s Standard Industrial Classification code.
