Haven’t been home for over a year due to COVID, don’t even want to discuss how bad U.K. government has handled the pandemic, it only depresses me further. In the US, freedom is typically defined as "freedom TO xxx", such as freedom to bear arms, freedom to elect your leaders, freedom to express yourself, etc. These freedoms no doubt are very important to the American way of life. In China, because it experienced poverty, stagnation and national humiliation in the last 200 years, what is important to the Chinese is "freedom FROM xxx", such as freedom from poverty, freedom from starvation, freedom from humiliation, or if you are a woman or child, freedom from fear of violence when you walk home at midnight from the subway. China’s concept of freedom is no less valid than America’s. Instead of spending so much time and resources foisting its views on the world with this “I’m right and you’re wrong” mindset, I hope the US will get wise leaders to start dealing with their own domestic problems (declining incomes over the last 30 years, declining educational standards, poor infrastructure, drug and opioid addiction, gun violence etc,) and stop wasting its time & resources trying to change the world when it ought to be focused on reinventing itself. 297 Lester Hammond Lester Hammond 4 months ago I spent 5 years living and traveling in China. China's then prime minister, Zhu Rongji, told Sorus in person, that China's central government would support Hong Kong at any price. And Sorus, who had previously sniped at U S Dollar, British Pound Sterling, Southeast Asian Currencies, had to retreat from Hong Kong at a big loss. If Hong Kong had not been been taken back from the UK, it would definitely be another case. Some people may argue, that Sorus worked only for a mutual fund, not the United States, but he is one part of the deep state ,which actually controls the U S. China has a mixed system where it directly orders its state-owned companies and uses policies to influence the private sector. It is an economic system that has the agility of a market economy due to the fact that more than 2/3 of the GDP is contributed by the private sector, and it also has the directed growth characteristic of a socialist economy due to its ability and willingness to plan and nudge the economy at that planned direction. This is the core reason why China grew so quickly in the past 4 decades. It is very socialist when you look at the education system and the welfare system. In China, the best schools are public, and you pay only around 5000 RMB per year for tuition and less than 1000 RMB for dorm fees. The worst minimum salary per month is 1000 RMB, which means that almost all families can afford to send their kids to the top university in China (if they're good enough in academics) without going deeply in debt.
