Does Freedom Exist in China? 中国有自由吗?This is one of the most common myths surrounding China today. Unfortunately many foreigners don't fully understand that most Chinese people do in fact feel a great sense of "freedom". I think it's important to understand that freedoms are subjective and mean different things to different people. Enjoy this video as we discuss more about freedom in both America and China and as always try to find common ground between the two superpowers in the world.

As an American citizen living in Hong Kong, I wish more Americans would have more perspective and thoughtful analysis like this. Well said.

China and the US simply have different concepts of "freedom".
In the US, freedom is typically defined as "freedom TO xxx", such as freedom to bear arms, freedom to elect your leaders, freedom to express yourself, etc. These freedoms no doubt are very important to the American way of life.
In China, because it experienced poverty, stagnation and national humiliation in the last 200 years, what is important to the Chinese is "freedom FROM xxx", such as freedom from poverty, freedom from starvation, freedom from humiliation, or if you are a woman or child, freedom from fear of violence when you walk home at midnight from the subway. China’s concept of freedom is no less valid than America’s.
Instead of spending so much time and resources foisting its views on the world with this “I’m right and you’re wrong” mindset, I hope the US will get wise leaders to start dealing with their own domestic problems (declining incomes over the last 30 years, declining educational standards, poor infrastructure, drug and opioid addiction, gun violence etc,) and stop wasting its time & resources trying to change the world when it ought to be focused on reinventing itself.

I spent 5 years living and traveling in China. When people tell me about the horrors of living in China I simply say: "China has changed a lot since you was there!" For the slow ones I need to explain what I mean but it usually opens the subject as to where they gained their "knowledge."
On my first trip I was in Cheng Du. Being a westerner I walked a lady to the bus stop at 10:30 at night. We took a short cut through a park. The lighting (solar powered) was enough to see the path. Coming through the dimly lit park were young women. Alone and at night walking safely. That was my first lesson about freedom in China.

The truth is that Western politicians care nothing about China's freedom. It is really about "divide and conquer" China.

Westerner: China have no freedom
Chinese: I feel safe and free
Westerner: your voice don't count, China have no freedom for the Chinese. Liberate the Chinese people
Chinese: but I don't wanna
Westerner: shut up! You have no freedom
Chinese: (WTF)...

I'm afraid to say that even China became democratic, some westerners would still gun for us for another 100000 reasons

Chinese: I can't vote, but I can afford healthcare, education and have dispensable income.
American: Healthcare is not affordable, student loan takes 30 years to pay off and I have barely any dispensable income, but I can vote!
Question: who has Freedom?

sometimes it's really annoying that some western world people are cocky enough and judge another country harshly with their superior attitude.

“Freedom means different things to different to different people.” Can't agree more. Besides, according my view, politics is quite complicated and it needs the people who involve in be well educated and experienced. China chooses the professional elites to run the government and do the management. It's just like you will go to see a doctor to fix yourself when getting ill, rather than turning to the public for a vote to dicide the treatment.

Chinese people travel all around the world, but people from the 5 Eyes almost never travel to China. Yet they think they are experts on Chinese politics. 👏👏👏 a round of applause for their confidence

I’m an overseas Chinese from Singapore. Being at the crossroad of Eastern and Western civilisations here, China has more personal freedom than the West even have/had. I’m not bothered to write them all here, but the West shouldn’t comment or even make a fuss if you haven’t visited China or learnt Chinese/East Asian history. Oh, and yes, China has a better political system that’s suited to East Asians than the Westerners think they know. ‘Meritocratic bureaucracy’ is the term for Chinese socialist political system, I know, CCP still uses the word Communist, but communist isn’t a bad or foul language, it essentially means community, caring for the Chinese community and global community. Why waste time on having 2 parties fighting, and forced the public to choose a lesser evil? And who by the way don’t even have background in civil service or care about their community? (think Trump, all he wants is to fatten his bank account)
