While for decades Australia provided natural resources to a modernizing China such as barley, timber, iron ore, copper ore, and coal as well as some finished goods such as wine; their relationship was one guided by their business interests. China exported finished products to the country such as electronics and automobiles and was content to run a current account deficit with Australia as the country was one of its main sources of commodity imports. The primary measures through which each country measured its relationship with the other were growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and imports/exports as a percentage of GDP. But under the leadership of Xi Jinping, China has taken a much more assertive stance in its foreign policy in affirming its rising role as a global superpower. Policies that depart strongly from those of previous administrations and laid out by the architect of China’s modernization, Deng Xiaoping. Policies that emphasized economic growth, trade with other nations, and opening up to the world. This has resulted in diplomatic clashes with the Australian government on many issues and led to China imposing substantial tariffs on many Australian goods. In the video we explore the history of the China-Australia relationship, how it has developed in recent years and where it’s going. #Australia #AustralianEconomy #chinaeconomy 68 Comments Auggie Giuseppe Add a public comment... Taiwan, HK, Xianjiang Australia crosses all of these. I am bit surprised as China's strategic competitors are Japan and US not Australia. But then its inevitable when all of Australian thinktanks are captured by American Military Industrial Complex. Over inflated problem with over the board reaction. 11 Boon Teo Boon Teo 2 months ago Very simple. Australia is a vassal state of the US. So they have no choice but to abide by the US bidding. 8 Kari Freyr McKern Kari Freyr McKern 2 months ago The opinions of vested interests invested in promoting the fear of conflict with China have wide sponsorship in our media. People to people connections are not celebrated. Xi had visited every state of Australia in one capacity or another. I don't believe we have any reason to fear China's rise.
