Barrios actually play steel strings with a piece of rubber that he invented that was placed at the bridge.
I studied with one of his last student Candido Morales and he told the sad story that they were coming to new york to perform and record together but then he had a heart attack and died without leaving us with a clear quality sound recording. What a lost for the world!!

When I want to learn a composition by Barrios I come here and I listen to Maestro Barrios play it .Then I play it as close as Barrios wanted to be played with all the folkloric nuances and rhythmic grooves it was meant to be played. The problem of most guitarist (virtuosos) now a days is that they don't search for the style and roots of South American music they intend to play and they end up sounding to mechanical/dry and classical (like they were playing Bach, Schubert,Mozart, ect). It does not matter if you are the greatest virtuoso alive (doing scales at light speed) but if you don't respect the style/roots of the music and the composer vission and scope then the music will sound technically perfect but at the same time expressive wise empty/dry and soulless.

This is precious. That we can hear such a genius play his own compositions is a gift.

"Danza Paraguaya" is not a transcription, but it's an original piece by Barrios. Also Aire Popular Paraguayo's title is "Caazapá", which is a Paraguayan popular air.
