I’m curious how you think California should address the insane costs of construction, new development right now, and how you would try to create housing in California that would be affordable across all socio-economic areas to avoid kind of the social evils that Lee Kuan Yew has managed to avoid back in Singapore. CHARLIE MUNGER 00:41 Well, that’s like asking some ordinary klutz, who’s drunk, if he can’t come up with something like Albert Einstein. It’s just too much. Lee Kuan Yew is the best nation builder that probably ever existed. And what he accomplished in Singapore considering what he started with, it was a miracle. And of course, I don’t know how to create that everywhere. I’m not sure Lee Kuan Yew could have done it if he didn’t have a bunch of fellow Chinese there. I’m not sure that any other ethnic group would have done it. I think he had a very – it looked like a terrible hand. And by the way, there’s an interesting story there. He needed an army when he first took over and nobody would help him. And only one nation in the whole world would help him and that was Israel. And he said, “How can I accept? I’m surrounded by Muslims who hate me. How can I accept military advice from Israel?” And he finally figured it out. He accepted the help and he told everybody they were Mexicans. (Laughter) Well with that little joke we’ll end the meeting. (Applause) 126 Comments Auggie Giuseppe Add a public comment... NUGNESS123 NUGNESS123 7 months ago Lee Kuan Yew was a great man. Truly, one of a kind. Singapore was blessed to have a leader who cared and made hard decisions. 111 Patrick Yim Patrick Yim 1 week ago Mr. Lee is not only the great founder of Singapore, his advice to Mr. Deng helped make China to become what it is today in a short 40 years. 25 Zo Han Zo Han 3 weeks ago You can say that again Charlie. LKY is a sui generis and a once in a lifetime human and Singapore is extremely lucky to have had him lead her. 45 J L J L 2 weeks ago Thanks for this. To build a nation requires the ability to ignore noises (complains, whines and gripes) and desperation to make things happen. If LKY was a person who cares about what others think or say and not desperate, Singapore would never existed. This applies to every one of us here. 27 Sean Teh Sean Teh 2 weeks ago I'm Singapore's neighbour. Our leaders publicly in the old days condemn The Great LKY but secretly put their money in Singapore banks. Sad that majority of neighbours are racists hypocrites. 38 Cornelius Thompson Cornelius Thompson 3 weeks ago Such a high praise for LKY. He deserves it. Such a dedicated and brilliant person. 54 PJ D PJ D 2 weeks ago Singapore is truly at great nation thanks to LKY. 12 Guess Who Guess Who 3 days ago From third world to first world just 50 years.. 2 Mr God Mr God 2 weeks ago All about Lee Kuan Yew is pure Anger When you are angry enough you direct your anger towards bettering a nation. 17 Eunice Tan Eunice Tan 3 days ago Ever so proud of our beloved Mr Lee Kuan Yew. In many life times, there will not be another Lee Kuan Yew who gave himself whole-heartedly to remove poverty and uplift the lives of Singaporeans. Unlike many other politicians, he and his old guards earned meagre incomes unworthy of their contribution but no teeth grinding!
